Win and place are different
A win bet requires your horse to finish first. A place bet depends on the number of paying places specified for that race. Field size and operator rules can affect those terms, so confirm them on the bet slip.
Each-way means two stakes
An each-way bet combines a win bet and a place bet. R10 each-way costs R20 in total. The place portion usually pays at a stated fraction of the win odds; check the number of places and fraction before confirming.
Check changes to the field
A non-runner, a withdrawn horse or a dead heat can change settlement. Deductions may apply when the field changes. Read the operator’s non-runner and dead-heat rules rather than relying on the originally displayed potential return.
Treat form as information
Distance, surface, going and previous performances can inform your understanding, but they cannot guarantee a result. Keep race-day spending within a fixed entertainment budget and stop when that budget is spent.
